Architect: Space 4 Architecture & Bulgari Design
Originally opened in 1989, this flagship store remains the largest Bulgari store in the U.S. With a completely renovated exterior, the store now has two entrances - one on Fifth Avenue and one on 57th Street. Both are backlit with special glass, creating a warm illuminating presence during the day and special glow at night.
An impressive glass façade stands at 21ft. replacing the small display windows that were set in Italian marble. As part of this façade, 11 oversized “vitrines” paying contemporary homage to the historic Bulgari flagship store on the Via Condotti in Rome.
The new design expanded the store from two to three levels. A voluminous staircase enhanced by backlit steps in glass and made of steel with a copper finish connects the various levels. Inside, Margaritelli wood floors imported from Italy combined with Trani marble walls give the effect of Roman architecture.
Special handmade steel finishes are used along the perimeter of the walls and inside the guest elevator. Additionally, copper finishing is used along the elevator wall. The challenge of coordinating the supply and installation of overseas production and the use of craftsmen sent from Italy was eased by Michael’s expertise and experience.
